If you happened to be watching television last night, you probably witnessed the big sports event that’s been the talk of the morning and no i’m not talking about the basketball game between the Cavaliers and the Pistons. I’m talking about the Scripps National Spelling Bee that was broadcast during prime-time hours on ABC. I was kind of confused as to why this was actually on that channel at such an hour, but than again I actually like watching these when they happen to be on tv. Usually reruns would come on ESPN2 during very late hours, and that was really the best time to watch something like that. There’s just something oddly compelling watching the most unathletic group of kids spelling their hearts out. I watched almost the entire competition, trying to spell a few of the words and getting pretty much all of them wrong. It’s just funny watching some of the kids and their mannerisms, especially the ones that write out the words on their hands and proceed to scratch their imaginary word to write something else down. If that’s not Must See TV, than I don’t know what is.
I remember being involved in our school’s spelling bee when I was in 6th grade, and I fucked up on my very first word. Not too hard to believe if you’ve witnessed my horrendous spelling ability here on the blog. I actually was somewhat decent at spelling and memorization and had high hopes that I would do well, but I was given some word that was related to a can or some bullshit. I think I ran back to the classroom crying, I don’t really remember. Clearly the beginning of the end for me in terms of a future spelling bee career.
I think future telecasts need something more to spice up the drama and intensity though. What should that something be? Clearly it’s trash talking kids. I think that would be great. The kids would come out with their nerd posse, spell their word than proceed to chest bumping and shit talking. What would be even more awesome? If they were decked out in fucking Karate Kid Cobra Kai outfits, an idea I heard on a radio show this morning. That would definitely instill the fear into some unsuspecting kid. Anyways, I have no idea what the hell i’m talking about. Did anyone else watch this last night?
