Calvin Harris claims he created disco. While he might not have created disco, he sure is helping to expand the ever growing indietronica scene. With his new album titled “I invented disco,” this 23 year old brings us a banger of an album that is sure to be played by your local indie DJ. Maybe it wont be, but If I were you I would be upset if I didn’t hear a track or two. A quick spin through this album is more than enough to get your feet moving.

At first listen, you can instantly hear similarities to artists like LCD soundsystem and Daft Punk, along with sounds of New Wave 80′s and Italo Disco. The first single off the album is “Acceptable in the 80′s.” While I instantly think of LCD, I feel that Harris brings more of a mainstream feel to the music, using more of a synth sound, while LCD uses some guitars in his work.

My two favorites off the album are “Electro-man”, and “The Girls.” “Electro-man” is a new wave/italo disco track that infuses just a few lines of lyrics. Pretty simple and straightforward, but I was instantly hooked. “The Girls” is intended to be the second single off of the album, and discusses Calvin’s (I assume) love for all types of girls, and how he gets all the girls.

On the flip side, I feel this album might be too one sided. While obviously some tracks are different than others, I feel the album as a whole lacks in diversity, and might just be too much Electro-pop all at once.

While I first heard about Calvin Harris a while ago on Bigstereo, I just recently heard the album in its entirety. You too can check out the entire album on his myspace page. Check it out before it disappears. Then when the album drops here in the states, you can go out and snag it. It should come out in early September.

I dont believe this..you invented Disco?….real disco was orchestrated,a lot of high hat and no screaming guitars,or synch, either until the end and disco was dying and moving into Electronica, or Punk or whatever you wanted to call it..listen to Carol Douglas Midnight Love Affair Suite, or Romeo and Juliett by Alec Constandinos..that is Disco
