Nothing has more potential to amaze and infuriate than a cover song. No matter what you do, someone will be angry that their favorite song was desecrated by the hands of a lesser musician. On the other hand, someone will be saying, “It’s even better than the original!” In any case, I always like a good cover that dares to stray from the sound of the original and bring a little something of its own to the table. So here they are, a few covers I’ve always loved, from Dismemberment Plan’s tragic reworking of the 80’s pop hit “Crush,” to Cake’s deadpan delivery of the very un-deadpan “I Will Survive.” Hopefully you’ll find something you like… Enjoy!
Sufjan Stevens – “What Goes On” (The Beatles)
Dismemberment Plan – “Crush” (Jennifer Paige)
Stars – “This Charming Man” (The Smiths)
TV On The Radio – “Mr. Grieves” (The Pixies)
Cake – “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor)
Rogue Wave – “Debaser” (The Pixies)
Okkervil River – “O, Dana” (Big Star)
Jonna Lee – “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” (The Postal Service)
Calexico – “Ocean of Noise” (Arcade Fire)
Oh, and since it’s Mother’s Day, you need to watch Mr. T remind you to respect yo mama… seriously!

I really like that Rogue Wave cover, thanks for posting these!
Ha, love the graphic.
And as much as I love both the Beatles and Sufjan Stevens, that cover was kind of difficult to listen to.
Love the song selection…
The Postal Service cover is my fav.
have you heard the Flunk cover of a New Order song ‘True Faith’ really beautiful song to begin with and an even better cover. Why am I so addicted to covers at the moment?
Crush was a late 90s hit, not 80s. great great song that original was.
Haha- Even back when it was popular the first time I guess it just always felt 80s to me… oops…
