When I first heard the track “Break” from Glasgow four-piece The Cinematics, I was at a relative’s place that was near Birmingham but felt more like I was out in the middle of nowhere. They had a satellite thankfully, so I basically spent my time listening to Sirius radio the entire weekend. The track I heard from the band though catchy, just seemed like one of those songs that I would just forget about and/or get tired of very quickly. Which of course is the truth, because I completely forgot about it upon returning home.
Well they’ve managed to creep their way back into my collective memory as I came across an article via The Tripwire, that contained a video of them covering “Grace” by Jeff Buckley. I watched the video and while I commend them in the decent attempt of covering the song, I was basically cringing throughout the entire duration of the video. I just feel that no one has any business covering Jeff Buckley, especially vocally. Just do your own version please.
The interesting bit of the story comes from the fact that according to the post, during one of their recent shows where they performed the cover, that Jeff’s mother Mary Guibert was in attendance and supposedly cried during the song. Who knows whether or not they were tears of joy or something completely different, but it’s an interesting story if it’s true. The guitarist is too loud and is drowning out Scott Rinning’s vocals, still it’s a fair attempt, but why would you put yourself out there with Jeff Buckley’s beautiful song that in my opinion can’t be bettered
i appreciate the fact that these kids like Jeff Buckley but they clearly do not know the two rules of life: 1. do not hit your grandmother, 2. you do not cover jeff buckley.
The sound recording was very bad not the performance.
