Shapes and Sizes | Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner
Posted by PJ in The Yellow Stereo, Upcoming
I hope everyone had a nice Easter weekend, as I certainly kicked off my weekend with a bang by watching Grindhouse on Friday night. So i’m sure you’re looking at the subject heading and saying to yourselves, “Hey i’ve already heard about this on this site or so and so.” Well, like i’ve made clear plenty of times before, I take no pleasure in being one of the first to post about newsworthy items such as this. I’m lazy, plain and simple. I like to take in new music on my own time. I usually miss out on a lot music until much later, or even not at all. I haven’t gotten complaints about it since I started blogging, so I don’t see much reason to change how I go about hearing music right?
With that being said, I was a bit surprised to hear that Shapes and Sizes were already looking to release their follow-up to their self-titled debut which was released in early 2006 before being reissued in the summer by Asthmatic Kitty. An excellent album that introduced us to the powerful and assertive vocals of Caila Thompson-Hannant. Though the vocals duties are sometimes shared between her and one of the guys (not sure who because he’s not very good honestly), it’s Thompson-Hannant’s voice that you come away remembering and gives the music an unique identity. I remember a nice little description that Mary, one of our former contributors to the blog, gave when she posted about the group last year:
Shapes and Sizes has the ability to capture feelings of child-like exploration like expert puppet masters who control the elements of jazz, pop, rock and folk in a well-developed play. It’s like they are kids playing games, but learning the ways of the real world.
Check out these two new tracks courtesy of Asthmatic Kitty as the upcoming album Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner will be released on May 22.

[...] I haven’t had a chance to listen to a lot of the rest of this week’s bunch, though I really like the few tracks i’ve sampled from Meg Baird’s Dear Companion. Chris over at Indietastic has been bugging me to check out the Handsome Furs, and i’ve previewed Shapes and Sizes’ Split Lips, Winnings Hips, A Shiner in a previous post. Anything else i’m missing?
