Another Thursday Graboid once again, but I couldn’t help it too much as there were what would seem like an insurmountable amount of albums to go through. I gave fair warning last week, but really no one should be surprised about what has come out this week. When you look at these releases, there’s just a little something for everyone’s tastes so hopefully you find something you like out of here. I’m also pretty sure I didn’t include many of other releases, so if you see one here that didn’t make than please feel free to suggest it here.

Some albums to highlight though as you have Andrew Bird’s Armchair Apocrypha which is just incredible. Before I even finished listening to the entire record I knew at that moment it was my favorite album of the year possibly. That’s certainly been put to the test recently but I think it will hold up quite well towards the rest of the year. He’s such a gifted musician and on this album he just shows a complete mastery of all his unique talents (god-like whistling ability included).
I’ve also been digging the new LCD Soundsystem, and I was quite surprised how much I loved listening to it. I really didn’t like James Murphy’s previous album as a whole, but with Sound of Silver it’s the tracks that don’t feature Murphy’s wild vocals that really stand out for me. For instance the opener “Get Innocuous” which is probably one of the best dance tracks i’ve heard all year. It’s steady and infectious drumbeat coupled with that great female vocal that comes in halfway to mix things up. Fucking love that track.
I haven’t given the rest of these albums as much time as the previously mentioned above, but new records from Panda Bear, Palomar, Low, Modest Mouse, Land of Talk (read) and Ted Leo – who I think i’ll be seeing in Atlanta next week – are many of the other choices you have for this week as well.

Andrew Bird | “Heretics”
Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid | Tongues

Yeah, definitely a great week. Andrew Bird is looking to be on my top 10 come year’s end, and the new Ted Leo is great stuff. I also still love Modest Mouse, and although my favorite albums by them are the Moon and Antarctica and the Lonesome Crowded West, I really like the new one, there are quite a few solid tracks. We’ll see how it ages…
I’ve never been big on Modest Mouse so I don’t really have much of an opinion of the new record. I think i left off a lot of albums, but really i kinda felt overloaded with stuff to listen to.
I’m a little late to the game: Everyone I know has already picked up the new Andrew Bird and played it to death (though it’s only been out for, like a week or so). I’ll probably pick t up today from Criminal Recs. I certainly need to catch up.
On a surprise note, I am really happy to see Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid posted here. I took me two years to figure out that Kieran Hebden and Four Tet are, um THE SAME PERSON. Like I said… I need to catch up.
I agree that Andrew Bird is probably one of the most phenomenal musicians of our time, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed by this one. It wasn’t as, for lack of a better word, “organic” as what I’m used to hearing from him.
But that’s ok! Not every album can be amazing. I’ll just keep listening to my old Andrew favorites.
Now if he would only come back to the South!
I think what really makes Armchair Apocrypha stand apart from the last album is that his talents are on display in a very subtle manner as if it’s not completely necessary to have it be the center of the music this time around. I guess it’s a more subdued sounds this time around.
[...] After the avalanche of releases last week, it’s nice to skim through a smaller list this time around. As you can see there isn’t exactly anything that would make you want to run out to go buy, but there isn’t much that’s really familiar. That’s what this is for though, to give you a taste of what’s out there week after week. Probably the biggest album out there is the U.S. release of the Kaiser Chiefs album Yours Truly, Angry Mob. I don’t care too much for them myself, but that’s something to look at I guess. For the most part, these are basically U.S. releases of U.K. albums (Klaxons, Mika). Anything worth picking up? Did I miss anything? Let me know! [...]
