I’ve mentioned here before about my than newfound love for the dreamy shoegaze of STAR. Back when I first discovered the band, they only had less than a handful of tracks out as there were no album releases to speak of even though they had apparently finished recording 2 or 3 full albums. What those few tracks held were a promising potential for what could be possibly in store for us once we were finally able to hear a full-length album from them. Surprisingly, that promise has finally come in the form of their full-length recording Devastator. It was just released a week ago, but I had no clue. Luckily I was mailed the album late last week, and i’ve been listening to it constantly ever since.
Bringing in a beautiful wall of guitar noise akin to Jesus and Mary Chain along with the dreamy whisper of Shannon Roberts’ almost bubblegum twee like vocals and you’ll have some of the most beautiful noise to grace your ears this entire year. Now that i’ve finally listened to this in full several times, I can no doubt desribe this as a pure shoegaze album. A completely fuzzed-out sound that basks in it’s shoegazer influences. Ranging from melodic to chaotic the tracks never stray to far as Roberts’ sweet vocals manage to hold everything together and makes you want to keep following this wall of noise to wherever it may lead.
There are just so many good tracks on this album to pick a few to sample, but hopefully you’ll enjoy these as much as I do. It’s a promise fulfilled as I give this album a shining recommendation. I currently have two copies, and I figured i’d give these away here on the site for all of you to get your hands on this great album. I do enjoy! My favourite song is Switchblade Heart. I discovered the band on myspace where that beautiful song is posted. Shannon’s voice is gorgeous and unforgetable. It’s the kind of sweetness that won’t rot your teeth. The music is like hope within sadness – the narrative to a smile in the shadows of our modern landscape. I adore.

I need some new shoegaze to listen to having got through my imported copies of silversun pickups album and EP.
[...] Looking at this week’s releases feels like the calm before the storm as we only have a small handful of goodies to check out before the overload of high-profile albums that are coming down the pipe next week. We’ll cross that bridge when the time comes next week, but for now let’s take a look at what we have right now. Before we start though, I’d like to go ahead and announce the two winners of the STARS album contest from last week. I’m still shocked at how many people commented to have a shot at winning a copy of this great album.
