This album came out in January and Paul has already mentioned it a while back and on a Daily Graboid, but I must sing my praises to Menomena’s Friend and Foe. Seriously, this album has worked its way into every nook and cranny of my brain and is easily one of my top few albums of the year thus far. And it should be one of yours. Unless it isn’t. In that case, it’s OK, we can still be friends.

It’s hard to describe Menomena’s sound, but weird is probably one of the first words that comes to mind. Weird, and minimalist in a busy kind of way. A lot is always going on, but at the same time it’s simple- there is space in their music that you can get lost in or fill yourself, kind of like Spoon (although they sound nothing like Spoon). Pianos, guitars, and saxophones add their touches, and the off vocals fit right in. Here are a couple of tracks from the album, and here’s a link to the quite funny video for “Wet and Rusting,” in which the guys get Kanye West to produce their last album and skateboard on trampolines. Enjoy!

I love Friend and Foe. For quite experimental music it has incredible heart and soul. I think Rotten Hell is my favourite track.
