Could Al Gore be following in the footsteps of Bob Geldof? Geldof who organized the massive musical fundraising event Live Aid in 1985 to combat famine relief. The news that was reported originally by the UK’s Financial Times, is that the former Vice President will be announcing a similar major concert event tomorrow in London. The event is aimed at bringing more attention to the current climate change crisis that has been the heart of the world’s major issues of the past few years. Here’s more information about the show, thanks to Treehugger for providing the article:

The event, scheduled for July 7, will feature co-ordinated film, music and television events in seven cities including London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto, with major broadcasters and media owners aiming to extend the reach of public awareness of global warming. …

They are promising a line-up of artists to “dwarf” that of the Live8 and Live Aid concerts, thought to be branded under the name “SOS”.

One person close to the event said yesterday: “The talent involved is just exponentially bigger because the issue itself is bigger.

“Live Aid was about asking people to stump up money, this is about effecting systemic change.

If this announcement is the real deal, then this will be such a massive undertaking and hopefully will help raise awareness for such a globally significant issue. Andy and I were talking about the multitude of artists that could be possibly announced to perform at this, and thinking about US performers just made us cringe for the most part considering who performed at Live 8 a few years ago. I’m sure you could expect London acts to be littered with named like Coldplay and Radiohead. One other interesting though about this whole project is how much the entire production would be completely counteractive to the cause they’re trying to raise awareness about.

For now though, this is all just speculation and rumors as we won’t officially know until this announcement is made tomorrow. If it’s all false, than at least it was an interesting undertaking to pursue.
