While 2007 is shaping up to be a great year for music, there are still loads of records to look forward to. One of my favorite debuts of the past couple of years is Marcus Congleton and co.’s self-titled Ambulance LTD. While the other members have gone on to form other groups (Boatzz, The Red Romance), Marcus Congleton is continuing to record as Ambulance LTD. He plans to release an album this year, and John Cale of Velvet Underground fame is going to be behind the boards for the recording. I think this is a great way to give Congleton a chance to focus the sound that Ambulance captured on their first album.

KawaiiKawaii are a French electro-pop that has recently been brought to my attention. Kawaii are comprised of La Loutre (the female vocals, piano toy and xylophone among other things) and Big Bisous (male vocals and guitar, and loads of other things). The description they sent me says it best : “Mad keen on sound collage, La Loutre and Big Bisous accompany their melodies with extracts of the 50’s television news, cartoon and toy melodies.” They have been compared to Deerhoof, but I tend to think their sound is a bit more minimalist. “Les Oreilles Qui Chauffent” reminds me of 28 Days Later for some reason. Their songs, while seeming childlike or innocent, have an engaging structure. I won’t try to further embarrass myself with my awful descriptive skills, so I’ll just let the music do the talking for me. Make sure to keep an eye out for these guys.

While I’m at it, be sure to check out this video. Apparently, Kanye West recently went over to Japan to produce/contribute to a track by the J-hip-hop group, The Teriyaki Boyz. The result, “I Still Love H.E.R.,” is a prime example of how awesome Kanye can be (and a cool little nod to Common). The video ain’t half bad, either.

i’ve always loved Ambuluance LTD, the debut album was really excellent. Didn’t they release an EP recently? I haven’t listen to it yet.
