Here’s another of the many album’s i’m late to the party on. I’m guessing this will just be an ongoing trend throughout the entire year, but what can I do? I’m lazy! I actually saw this mentioned on Sinéad’s blog as highly recommended a few months back, and since then it’s just been sitting in the back of my mind as something I needed to get around to listening to. Well, I finally did in fact give this one a listen a few weeks ago and so i’m here slapping myself for not listening to it any sooner. Maybe it’s because it didn’t ring in my mind that Gruff Rhys is the frontman for the highly successful Welsh band the Super Furry Animals. Yes, I forgot. Please don’t kill me. I think that’s the second time i’ve said that in as many posts. Talk about major paranoia creeping in.
Listening to Candylion, it’s more of an acoustic affair but with a flair of that lovely pop goodness I love. It’s very laid back though, as this record would be great to listen to while driving down some back country road on a nice summer day, or in this case late-winter. From the title track forward, you have a sound and tone that just makes you feel happy as it’s definitely a singer/songwriter’s record for sure. Oddly enough though, my favorite track “Lonesome Words” is the one that’s completely different from the entire album altogether. It almost has this feel of a lost track to some sad western. Anyways, this is probably one of the first great albums from top to bottom of 2007. Definitely check this out along with Gruff’s first solo album Yr Atal Genhedlaeth that was released in 2005, though I heard it’s completely in Welsh (I haven’t listened to it).
