I’m sure all of you are used me taking these extended breaks, so nothing more that I can do but apologize for it. The past week and a half i’ve been completely distracted with a little computer game that was released, so all my time has been sucked dry by it. With so much time away from the blog, I hope this week’s edition of The Daily Graboid will make up for it somewhat. It should because this is the first major week of releases, and my goodness there were plenty of releases to sink your teeth into.

Headlining this week’s batch of goodies are The Shins’ Wincing the Night Away which is decent, but as anyone who’s been around me lately knows that i’ve been very anti-Shins since their “change your life” bullshit popularity from Garden State. Of Montreal’s Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is definitely worth picking up, as is every one of their albums. I’m still not completely sold on it as I found it somewhat underwhelming compared to Satanic Panic in the Attic and The Sunlandic Twins. If you’re up for an album that’s pure electro-dance from beginning to end, then you’ll be satisfied in that aspect. Rounding out the big name albums is Deerhoof’s Friend Opportunity, which i’m completely in love with as you have one of the catchiest singles of the year with “+81″ along with a slew of tracks that are just as good.

Those weren’t the only albums to come out though, as I found about 9 or 10 other albums that are just as good to recommend. A couple worth mentioning are David Vandervelde’s Moonstation House Band (which I really enjoyed listening to at work), the U.S. release of Fujiya & Miyagi’s Transparent Things and Menomena’s Friend and Foe. I want to say that I like The Good, The Bad & The Queen record, but it just sounds kind of boring to me. I’ve only listened to maybe half of it so maybe the rest of it will make up for it. Other than that, the rest of these releases I managed to sample a couple of tracks from each and they seem pretty good as well so check those out. Is there something I may have missed? Hope you find something you like!

are you serious? that is the most ridiculous reason to stop liking a band i have ever heard. and honestly, sorry, but you’re missing out with that attitude.

  2. Paul says:

that’s my opinion so I don’t really care what anyone thinks. They’ve always been a great band but not to that degree. I like the new album though, so still hate me?

  3. anon says:

glad you took those rob crowe tracks down. that whole record sucks.

  4. Pablo says:

I’m kinda dissapointed with the new Shins album… It’s well-crafted and whatnot, but unlike their first two albums, something is missing. I’ll still probably go see them next month when they come to Utah…

Pablo, fwiw, I wasn’t immediately taken with the Shins album either. However, I’ve found it has really grown on me over time. Might give it another shot.

The best of these cds has to be Six Parts Seven, words are not needed. Shimmering, this music wraps you in a warm blanket. Thank you and Thank Six Parts Seven.

  7. Paul says:

Yeah i’m definitely liking these songs from Six Parts Seven. Will have to listen to more now.

  8. Nicole says:

Ditto on the Shins Paul! I always appreciate your picks (and more often than not I usually agree)………although the shins album is growing on me! Keep the good stuff coming!

  9. Brady says:

Whoa. I can’t stop listening to Mew and Six Parts Seven. Good grief, this stuff is great!!

  10. Jeff says:

Yeah, the Shins have their work cut out for them after Chutes Too Narrow. Their latest stuff, in my opinion, is not up to snuff. It’s not bad, but “not bad” isn’t exactly the best goal to shoot for in music.

  11. [...] This album came out in January and Paul has already mentioned it a while back and on a Daily Graboid, but I must sing my praises to Menomena’s Friend and Foe. Seriously, this album has worked its way into every nook and cranny of my brain and is easily one of my top few albums of the year thus far. And it should be one of yours. Unless it isn’t. In that case, it’s OK, we can still be friends. [...]

Thanks for the Of Montreal, Mew, and Shins. I’ve been needing them for a while. :)
