If you haven’t heard of Lost in the Trees and the upcoming EP TIme Taunts Me, than my friends you definitely will soon enough. The band is the work of one man by the name of Ari Picker, who’s also fronted The b-sides and current band The Never. It’s a simple EP that’s compiled of songs that have been written over the last seven years. When I sat down at work to listen to this last week, I couldn’t believe how varied in sound this was. I mean it wasn’t drastic, but I noticed at it’s core were a bunch of guitar-based folk songs strung together with some gorgeously arranged classical music. This apparently came from Picker’s time at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he was able to form a 9-piece backing orchestra that you can tell adds so much to his otherwise simple style of music.

I’ve always loved the inclusion of classical instrumentation to various forms of music, as the sound violins, cellos, etc. just somehow manage to put me at ease whenever I hear it. I mentioned how varied some of the songs are, and it’s interesting because some tracks I could hear a definite Danny Elfman influence of a wildly dark and brooding musical style that really makes this collection of tracks standout as a whole. Not surprising that I notice that his myspace influences indeed has Danny Elfman along with another well-known film composer Mark Mothersbaugh. Strip the vocals away and you could easily have music that would be perfect for a film. Definitely check this one out as it’ll be released in March on Trekky Records. By far, one of the most engaging EPs i’ve heard this year.
