Before I went to work yesterday I saw an interesting commercial. It was for a new Japanese restaurant here in Auburn or something, and I know you’re saying huh? What’s so interesting about that you say? Well here’s the catch, it had a DRIVE-THRU and well that’s amazing to me. I asked myself how is that at all possible considering having to keep the food fresh and fast, but that question only lasted a few seconds as I decided I didn’t care and that I needed to go see this for myself. After work I drove there, and if I remember correctly the place was called Hibachi’s? Ok, whatever so I went and yes there was a drive-thru. I was amazed, and I found this extremely hilarious…must be an asian thing I don’t know. The food was good though, and the little asian girl knew who I was which I found extremely comforting. Random story right? That’s exactly the kind of thing this feature is about so I figured i’d include it here.

There are some great releases this week I must say. One i’m excited about the most is one of my favorite female singer-songwriters, PJ Harvey’s Peel Session compilation, which joins countless others (Pulp, House of Love, Siouxsie and the Banshees to name a few) as they will be released in commemoration of the second anniversary of the death of legendary DJ/broadcaster John Peel. I can’t wait to pick this one up as these tracks sound so good. It’s Polly Jean stripped down to her core and the results sound so raw and powerful. I think I read somewhere before that she’s also working on a new album that will be piano based. Now if she would just tour some place near me! I swear, she never tours in the U.S., ever. The one chance I had to see her was the last year Lollapalooza was still doing it’s cross-country festival thing. Anyone remember that? It was only a few years ago, but I think Polly Jean, Morrissey and Broken Social Scene were gonna be in Atlanta. Than it got cancelled! I was so devastated.

Joining the line of wonderful soundtracks that have been released this year is the Stranger Than Fiction original soundtrack. The film starring Will Ferrell will be coming out this friday. The soundtrack is just loaded with great music including a new track from Spoon (“The Book I Write”) along with some well known older tracks. Joining Spoon are lots of other great bands including Maximo Park, Delta 5, Califone, Vangelis, the Jam, and M83.

Former Belle and Sebastian vocalist and cellist, Isobel Campbell is back again this year (to my surprise) with a new solo record entitled Milk White Sheets. If you remember she also released Ballad of the Broken Seas, a collaboration album with former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan. It was an interesting album, but a lot of the songs on it didn’t really work for me. My opinion means nothing though as it was on the short list for this year’s Mercury Prize.

Rounding out the rest of the week’s releases are Matt and Kim’s self-titled debut. I wrote about them a couple of months ago so read up on it as their catchy boy/girl indie-pop is good stuff. I’m not too familiar with a lot of the rest of this list, but I think I read some where that The Slip are currently opening for My Morning Jacket on their tour right now, so check those out as well. What else is good this week? If there’s anything you want to recommend that i’ve missed than please feel free in the comments.

Where have you been? I even knew about that Hibachi place and i’ve been gone for 8 months. Besides, that sketchy Nihon place (the neon colored building that replaced the Wendy’s) is much better. What kind of Asian are you? Thanks for the music!

Sorry, I haven’t looked at that location in a while nor do I even pay attention to stuff like that in Auburn. I just randomly saw the commercial so I figured it was new. I’m a bad asian :(
