Page France & Anathallo @ Kilby Court (SLC), 11-04-06
Posted by Pablo in The Yellow StereoWell, last night I took a little trip to Salt Lake City for a chance to see a couple of great bands play at one of the smallest venues ever- Kilby Court. Seriously, the place it a little brick shack of sorts, no bigger than some gas station quik-e-marts… which of course makes it an awesome place to see indie bands. I even managed to snap a couple of semi-decent pictures with my crappy camera… and no, I wasn’t using any zoom on these shots. The place is really that small!
First up was Page France, and their set was great. (See my earlier post on them here.) Frontman Michael Nau really gets into his songs, and even makes some nice little variations (lyrically and melodically) that suit the live setting well. The intimate setting was great for the mellow tracks and made the ringing cymbals even louder on the ones that rock a little more. They stuck mostly to tracks off of Hello, Dear Wind, as well as a few off their Pear and Sister Pinecone EPs. “Elephant” was particularly energetic, and ending the set with “Antartica” and “Chariot” was the icing on the cake. I was a little dissapointed that they didn’t play anything off of their debut, Come, I’m A Lion, but the show was great so I’m not complaining. See these guys if you get a chance.
If you haven’t heard Page France yet, I hereby command thee to do so. And to make it easier, here are a few tracks-
Page France – “Antartica (My Beloved Home)”
Page France – “Chariot”
Page France – “Junkyard”
Anathallo also put on a fun show, almost entirely off their recent Floating World album. They explained that they were feeling a bit goofy after spending the day in the car, and it showed. They joked around a bit, and kept the audience laughing with some funny choreography (above you can see them all bent over, they were slowly rising up and then they’d all suddenly jump and clap together before bending over again). Their set flowed really well, and it was amazing to see them all perform even though they were pretty cramped on that small stage. People were clapping, banging drums, then picking up horns to play, then singing- it was all quite impressive. If these bands are headed your way, check ‘em out. I won’t bore y’all with a long, drawn-out review, so just know it was a sweet night. Of course, I can’t let you go without a few samples, eh? Enjoy!
Anathallo – “Hanasakajiijii (Four: A Great Wind More Ash)”
Anathallo – “Hoodwink”

I can only get good pictures when i’m up close. These are good though, and looks like a fun show to be at. Didn’t you mention earlier you did an interview with Anathallo? or was that something else…iono haha.

Well, I wrote them an email, and they said they would like to do an email interview, so I sent them an email with some questions but never got a reply (as of yet). I don’t blame them for not getting around to it, seeing as they’re on the road and all.
