In a surprising email that I completely missed a few days ago, the first single off of Montreal’s forthcoming Hissing Fauna, Are you The Destroyer? was released out to the public. The album, which is not due out until January 23rd, 2007, will be released on Polyvinyl Records. Sadly, most people already knew this as the album happened to be leaked a few months ago. Regardless, the release finds Kevin Barnes and co. with a growing popularity throughout 2006 with continuous touring and good word of mouth of in my opinion, 2005’s most overlooked album The Sundlandic Twins. That coupled with numerous tracks featured in commercials, including the complete butchering of “Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)” in that Outback Steakhouse advertisement. Their songs kinda lend themselves to that kind of thing anyways, I mean they’re great pop songs.
For most that have already heard the new album, it’s been said to be a straight-up electronic dance record. It seems like a natural progression though considering the increased usage of electronic sounds with the last two releases. This new single though, is a great example of how easy the group is capable of putting out infectious pop songs at will. It’s littered with nothing but layers of electronic sounds and synths with a rolling drum beat set over the quirky lyrics and creative melodies of Kevin Barnes that remain intact. Yeah, i know that is a terrible description, but that’s not what I like doing. It’s just a good pop song ok!?
Along with that single, the Daytrotter session is available that was done last month with Kevin and the Late B.P. Helium. It’s worth checking out to hear the stripped down versions of tracks off the previous albums and the new one. I’ve also included a few singles that I posted months ago that were off of a few limited edition 7″ released throughout this year. Enjoy!

Overlooked? That record sold 50k copies, I think!
Well I mean when it was released initially! I remember it wasn’t on anyone’s top lists. But I didn’t read blogs at that time.
