If I may direct you to Matt of I Heart Music’s interesting collaboration with numerous Canadian bloggers, music writers and media types who polled and compiled the “33 Hottest Bands In Canada”. The criteria was that the bands had to be Canadian (of course) and had to make some kind of splash in 2006. Some of the most well known bloggers like Frank of Chromewaves and Dan/Sean of Said The Gramophone were all part of this large panel that was put together. With names like that involved, this project would at least have some kind of respectibility to it.

Of course there are the usual suspects that we’d expect to be here to this list with The Arcade Fire at #26, MSTRKRFT at #23, The Dears at #19, Junior Boys at #18, Destroyer at #2, Metric/Emily Haines at #12 and Broken Social Scene at #6. Surprisingly I see no Amy Millan (Stars) on this list, but her solo debut wasn’t really that good. It’s a nice list though because there are plenty of names there that i’m not familiar with so it’s nice to check out those bands (there are mp3s available for most of the bands on the list). That and the number of the great new bands that happened to make the list like Tokyo Police Club, The Lovely Feathers and the newest Canadian super group Swan Lake to name a few. I was kinda surprised with the #1 choice which was bestowed to Final Fantasy aka Owen Pallett. I was extremely late to the party with finally giving in and listening to He Poos Clouds, but it’s a great album nonetheless and one I regret taking so long to listen to.
Go check that list out though as hopefully you can discover something new from it. What are your thoughts on the list?
