It’s nice when I actually dig through my email and find something good. It’s not so nice that a day after I read the email that the band is featured almost everywhere. That is the case with White Flight, the solo project of Justin Roelofs. Does that name sound familiar to you? It certainly did to me when I first read his name. Justin Roelofs was formerly of The Anniversary, which is why I gave these songs a chance.

If you’re expecting anything remotely similar to that band than you’ll be sadly disappointed. Recorded over a year in Lawrence, Kansas where he grew up and inspired by a summer Roelofs spent in South America which included consumption of the psychedelic potion Ayahuasca. I honestly have no idea what that is though, but thanks to Wikipedia I am 1% smarter for knowing what it is now. So that being said, all of that lead to what we’re hearing now, for instance on the track “Solarsphere” which has a bluesy kind of psych-folk going on. It’s an interesting song as it veers in and out with frantic harmonies and beats.

Listen to these songs and check out more from White Flight as it’s available on Range Life Records which was founded by Justin and label owner Zach Hangauer to spotlight the best new music coming out of Lawrence, Kansas and also on Itunes.

I’ve been playing this on my radio show for a few months now. Have you heard the whole record? It’s amazing. If you see the video that goes along with “Death Hands” which is by far the best track, you actually understand that crazy lyrics. It’s definately in my top 20 of the year.

I am exceedingly excited to hear these songs as I was a big Anniversary fan in high school until I saw them live in CA probably coked out of their minds and sucking mightily. They certainly had the potential, but it never came to fruition.

    cheers, baby

I’ve only heard about three songs so far. I only heard it last week when I decided to start reading my email for a change.

Yeah, I was a big fan of The Anniversary as well. Definitely was potential there.

this album is amazing! even though i can draw comparisons to other artists like beck, modest mouse, or even the outkast!, it is still a completely original record that continues to blow my mind every time i listen to it.
