In my quest to deliver more asian bands on this blog, I stumbled upon The Marshmallow Kisses. You can just tell from the name that I absolutely had to write about them. I mean come on! It just doesn’t get anymore cute than that. With a name like that you also can’t expect the music to be anything beyond some kind of melt-in-your-mouth pop goodness. That’s exactly what kind of music this is though. It’s perfect indie-pop and and cute enough to make you sick to your stomach, but in a good way….i guess.
The names behind this music are Peter and Edine, who are from Hong Kong. I don’t ever hear a lot of music from China so this is a welcome addition to a lot of the indie-pop i’ve been enjoying lately. Information about the band is pretty scarce on their website besides the fact that a lot of their music from their EP titled I Wonder Why My Favorite Boy Leaves Me an EP, released last year, has been used in many popular ads in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Their influences on their myspace page include Shibuya-kei, which is a good representation of their sound as that style of Japanese pop is largely influcenced by bossa nova, jazz and lounge music. Like I said though, the music is just the kind of stuff that has the ability to put a smile on your face. Edine has such a lovely voice as it floats effortlessly along with Peter’s to the music. I could imagine getting stuck in an elevator with someone and having this music playing, while hopefully not having the other person strangle me from the overload of cuteness that permeates from it.
I love all these songs i’ve heard, and i’ll be definitely purchasing the EP. Fall in love with The Marshmallow Kisses too and send an email to Peter to purchase anything off their website. You can sample a few more songs off the EP on their website as well.

Totally in love with these two songs, My Dear Giant is just a sublime moment of pop magic. Twee for sure, but it’s dreamy stuff. Great post!
Hi, I’m HK, really happy that you promote HK indie in your site! I think HK indie has a lot of potential and there are many talented musicians here!
Also try “My Little Airport” it is also a very sweet indie band.
Thanks! I think there’s so many amazing asian bands in general, so i’m definitely trying to include and/or write about as many as I can find. I’ll definitely check out My Little Airport as well, thanks for the suggestion!
Just stumbled across this article while researching the Marshmallow Kisses. My webshop Pacifiction Records carries a compilation titled Grass Fest 2007 which contains a cool Marshmallow Kisses track with a 60’s pop vibe called “a-la-pa-ti.” Grass Fest is a big indie pop/neo folk event on Taiwan… altho this year they have some metal and punk:P

I also run a website for the Taiwan indie scene called Island of Sound and made a small page highlighting The Marshmallow Kisses’ contributions:
