I’ve always said how much I consider Sondre Lerche as one of the most criminally under-appreciated singer-songwriters of the last few years. This is most evident now as the news of a new single that was released from the Norwegian’s fourth album Phantom Punch due out next year sometime in February. Even though I did read this news on Pitchfork, I haven’t really seen it mentioned elsewhere on the blogs. Sondre is a brilliant talent in my opinion, the proof is in his albums like Two Way Monologue and the fantastic debut Faces Down. I’ve even mentioned here that I enjoyed Duper Sessions which a lot of people for the most part didn’t like at all. I’ll admit that the album as a whole didn’t really work but a few standout tracks like “Minor Detail” are just a taste of the pop perfection that he’s capable of. So basically, any new material I can get my hands on is a big deal to me.

This new single, title track “Phantom Punch” gives us a taste hopefully of what we can expect from the upcoming album. There’s no backup jazz band here folks as this song showcases his band, The Faces Down, in a completely different direction than what we’ve heard previously. It’s definitely a good pop song with lots of upbeat energy with a catchy chorus and guitar riff. Please tell me i’m not the only one that’s hearing animal sounds in this song as well. I’m sure that’s a terrible description, but i’m never good with things like that. I’ll just say that I think the song is great, simple as that and looks like a return to form from his first two albums. Next year is just shaping up to be amazing with many notable albums releases, including this one. 2007 just can’t come any sooner.

sorry for the terrible quality of the mp3. It’s better than nothing though. I’m just surprised more blogs aren’t giving Sondre more attention.
