Marie Antoinette | Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Posted by Paul in The Yellow Stereo
You would not believe the lengths I went to in trying to find this soundtrack here in Auburn. If there’s one complaint I always have about this place, it’s that I can never find a place carrying any of the music i’m looking for. I’d rather go to a record store and purchase rather than buying online because I just like having an item at that very moment. I’m pretty impatient when it comes to wanting music so that’s what I do. I pretty much went everywhere you could think of that carried new album releases. Very much to my surprise none of them had any copies at all. Did I end up finding it? Sadly, no. A dull way to end my hours of driving around tonight with no reward to show for it.
I’ve been patiently waiting for this soundtrack for months now. Ever since i saw the teaser trailer for Marie Antoinette – which contained “Age of Consent” from New Order (my favorite New Order song) – I was pretty much dead-set on purchasing it. I didn’t even know what the track listing was but considering Sophia Coppola’s track record of utilizing such vast and unique usage of popular music with her first two films – The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, I knew I would not be disappointed. It’s one thing I admire about Sophia is that perfect marriage she’s able to find between visuals and sound. Film and music go hand in hand for me and just finding that delicate balance between the two can create such amazing results.
Looking at the tracklist for the soundtrack, the approach to the music for the film is clear as it focuses heavily on a lot of vintage new wave, contemporary and even opera. You can probably compile most of the soundtrack yourself as a lot these great tracks are readily available elsewhere from groups like Siouxsie & The Banshees, New Order, Gang of Four and The Cure. There’s also the staples of Sophia Coppola films like Air and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine who by the way seems to only come out of his cave for her (we should all be thankful for that at least). Surprisingly, Phoenix are notably absent from the soundtrack. I just assumed that it would contain something from them considering lead singer Thomas Mars and Sophia are dating (they were featured on the Lost in Translation soundtrack though).
Even though I wasn’t able to pick up the soundtrack (I guess i’ll have to just order online), I was still able to gather a few tracks from the soundtrack anyways from my own cd collection and elsewhere. I really love the inclusion of a lot of The Radio Dept. tracks as they’re a band i’ve been listening heavily to as of late and the sounds fits in very well in what you’d come to expect from a soundtrack like this. Oh! Did I mention it’s a 2-disc collection?! Most of the songs I provided are from the teaser and trailers of the film. The “Age of Consent” track is sadly not included on the soundtrack but i’ve got that one for all of you though. There’s definitely enough here to satisfy one’s need for quality music, so be sure to check this one out it’s available where you are unlike here for me!

My fav New Order song = Bizarre Love Triangle. Supposedly a lot of Asian Americans really love it too…
Hi Irene
Yeah, I definitely love that song as well. I’ve never heard of that being popular with Asian Americans though haha.
Hey Paul
Yea, I think I read it from my old roommate’s reader when she was taking a music theory class. Apparently, us Asians just can’t get enough of that beat.
absurdly enough, even though it worls to perfection in the trailer “Age Of Consent’ is NOT on the soundtrack, Go figure.

Hehe, I’m Asian American, you can have the BLT, I’ll take the “Blue Monday” to go.
Yeah it seems to be a safe bet now to not expect songs featured on trailers to not make the soundtrack. I guess that’s why it doesn’t bother me as much that it’s not included. Kinda like that Science of Sleep trailer that had all those great songs but that soundtrack doesn’t contain any of them.
I’d say that’s false advertinsing…
thanks so much for age of consent
i think your links aren’t working anymore
the links work. It’s just ezarchive likes to throw up sometimes. I think 90% of the other blogs use it too so…bandwith issues
This is annoying me though. I’ll look to alternative means to host files when i get home from work.
Thank you so much, I’m so looking forward to this movie.
beauty, i just lucked out and got them. thanks!
it made me happy to read this post since i saw the movie in amsterdam last summer and had the exact same excited reaction to the soundtrack!
[...] So i’m sure you thinking why I would be talking about this album now if I didn’t think it was any good, right? Well, I think the charm of this album really came to me after a long period of time of listening to it on and off. I still listen to it regularly and it’s one of those albums that get better with more listens. I would hope that was the case for most people as with the inclusion of several tracks on the Marie Antoinette soundtrack as well would’ve given them significant push of this criminally overlooked band in the same vein as what Lost in Translation did for Phoenix….well….sort of.
