DJ Never Forget | 2nd Class: The Story Of A Laptop DJ

If you remember a few months ago we featured NYC’s DJ Never Forget and his Going To Work mix. It was a really great mix which contained some solid track selection despite haters who still don’t show any respect for the laptop dj. Now my friends, the man is back and sent us his newest mix a few days ago entitled: 2nd Class: The Story Of A Laptop DJ. I listened to this throughout the weekend and as previous mixes before, this one delivers. Usually with these kinds of mixes, song selection is key as one bad choice could ruin the entire thing and the one reason I think it’s ridiculous to say anything bad about the mixes as he knows how to choose good tracks. The “La Ritournelle” remix is killer though, but enough from me. Here’s the man himself with some words of wisdom and praising the gospel of the labtop dj:
Stuck somewhere between ipod and vinyl, lies the laptop dj. Neither a selector nor old school, the laptop dj languishes in a world of 0’s and 1’s, able to mix, but never taken seriously. While able to obtain certain status, there is a glass ceiling they must watch their wax brethren through as they obtain international fame and fortune. Currently, there is a raging debate regarding the laptop djs place in the world. They are consumed by their need to prove that they too have an identity all their own. No longer complacent, their voices are being raised.
This is the tale of one dj’s struggle.

This is, admittedly, a pretty cool selection and I downloaded it as it’s got two of my top tracks of the moment on it (in “Standing in the Way of Control” and “Whoo! Alright-Yeah…Uh Huh”) and I was looking forward to seeing what a man and a laptop could do with it. I don’t know, maybe it’s listening to too many 2manydjs sets but it was more that a little disapointing. Perhaps next time he could try a little mixing and then maybe he wouldn’t feel so trapped by the “glass ceiling” through which he “must watch [his] wax brethren … as they obtain international fame and fortune.”

i’m with you, mr. never forget. i too, am a digital dj. raise your game, make inventive use of the loop feature, and if you can, take it to the next level with video. (i’m beginning to experiment with Arkaos, a midi controlled video/visual fx program , and seeing what i can do with this in conjunction with Traktor and Abelton).
And if you haven’t already, for god sakes get a midi controller and a decent sound card (m-audio firewire audiophile + m-audio trigger-finger is in my set-up) so that you don’t have to mix deaf and one-handed.
And to all the laptop-dj-haters, my collection goes deeper and wider then you and your buddies vinyl crate put together. let me know when you have 45k tracks to choose from. 63% legit, too. i got your vinyl rips right here, and tracks from the 50s, 60s, & 70s that even your mom’s never heard of.
