This week brings us a ton of amazing new releases. Probably one of the best weeks of new music this entire year. There were so many albums that i’m cutting the samples to only one track instead of the usual two. A lot of these i’m only listening to for the first time like Bettie Serveert, Richard Buckner and Favourite Sons to albums I can completely recommend to anyone from Brazilian Girls, Junior Boys and Yo La Tengo.

There were also a lot of other releases that i’ve listened to that I didn’t think are worth posting on here. I listened to a little off the Ima Robot album and i’m just not digging anything off it along with the new Xiu Xiu, in which none of those songs were ever hardly accessible. If you’re expecting to see those then i’m sorry to disappoint.

This whole month really has brought us some great albums so far, and there is nothing but more to be had in the next coming weeks. Anyways, nothing more to say so let’s get to this week’s releases shall we? Come back next week for more Daily Graboid goodness!

The Album Leaf | Into The Blue Again
The Album Leaf | “Always For You”

Pablo (Paul M.) wrote about this album previously so check it out here to find out more about it. I will always be a fan of anything post-rock, and I haven’t really been disappointed with anything i’ve heard from this band so i’m definitely looking forward to sitting down and really absorbing what this has to offer.

Bettie Serveert | Bare Stripped Naked
Bettie Serveert | “Storm”

Bettie Serveert are a Dutch four-piece that play some nice heartfelt pop. Apparently they’ve been around since 1986, so that makes me feel terrible that i’m just listening to them for the first time. Good music though, better then not discovering them at all.

The Black Keys | Magic Potion
The Black Keys | “Strange Desire”

I’ve never been the biggest Black Keys fan but some of the songs i’ve heard off here are pretty damn good. There are some serious blues guitar-riffs to be had with a lot of these songs.

Brazilian Girls | Talk To La Bomb
Brazilian Girls | “Jique”

I absolutely love Brazilian Girls! You should too, as their brand of sophisticated retro-electronic pop just soothes with former jazz singer Sabina Sciubba. I can’t recommend this one enough.

Electric Six | Switzerland
Electric Six | “Rubber Rocket”

I really don’t know how to describe this band. All I can say is that the music is all over the place with a style that’s been labeled as “dirty disco” littered with garage rock, metal, and new wave riffs and equally ridiculous songs. But it’s all in good fun really, and the type of music that demands the volume turned up. (i’m really running out of things to say)

Favourite Sons | Down Beside Your Beauty
Favourite Sons | “When You’re Away From Me”

I read about these guys on The Tripwire and I really liked what I heard so here’s a track from the Brooklyn quartet’s debut album.

Junior Boys | So This Is Goodbye
Junior Boys | “In The Morning (ft. Andi Tomi)”

Another album i’ve been really enjoying is So This Is Goodbye from Junior Boys. Really good dance pop, and just listen to one of my favorite songs from the album above as it’s just oozing with sexiness, seriously.

Magnolia Electric Co. | Fading Trails
Magnolia Electric Co. | “Lonesome Valley”

I think it’s time Jason Molina (also of previous band Songs: Ohia) get his due as he’s easily one of our more great and celebrated singer-songwriters working right now.

Page France | Hello, Dear Wind
Page France | “Chariot”

Hello, Dear Wind from Page France is a reissue of one of the most overlooked and underrated albums of 2005. Mostly because it was released so late into the year but it’s safe to say that everyone knows of the band’s brilliance by now.

Richard Buckner | Meadow
Richard Buckner | “Lucky”

This is a guy i’ve only recently listened to and he’s got a really great and unique voice and the music style kinda reminds me of Pete Yorn a little bit. Definitely check this track out.

Starflyer 59 | My Island
Starflyer 59 | “Mic the mic”

It’s been years since i’ve listened to anything from Starflyer 59, but thankfully they still sound just as good as ever with their tenth full-length album.

The Rapture | Pieces of the People We Love
The Rapture | “The Devil”

Listening to The Rapture is kinda hit or miss for me, stemming back from their debut album I pretty much have only liked a few songs here or there. The songs that I do enjoy are excellent but the rest are basically….blah. I just haven’t figured out why a lot of these songs do absolutely nothing for me.

TV On The Radio | Return to Cookie Mountain
TV On The Radio | “Dirtywhirl”

I’m not as big a fan of these guys as the rest of our blog collective here. I remember listening to that EP a long time ago and just thought everything on it was terrible except for “Staring At The Sun”. Don’t hate me, but just give me a reason why I should give this album a chance and I will probably listen.

Viva Voce | Get Yr Blood Sucked Out
Viva Voce | “So Many Miles”

I’ve already written at length previously about this band. Read more about them here and listen to a few more choice tracks.

Yo La Tengo | I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
Yo La Tengo |“The Weakest Part” Link removed at request
I’ve been really looking forward to listening to this album since hearing “Beanbag Chair” months ago. Plus you really can’t go wrong with that album title as it’s probably the best title i’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Sorry for the short descriptions but by the time I actually get around to writing something about each of these i’m usually pretty exhausted. With so many new albums this week, I just want to get this thing written up and over with so I can get some sleep (currently 6 am as I type this). Hope you all enjoy, and definitely pick up some albums this week as you won’t be disappointed!

  1. Amazing week in music indeed. Thanks for reminding me about the Richard Buckner! Isn’t there a new Sparklehorse album coming out this month?

While Buckners last two efforts (Dents and Shells and Meadow)might resemble Pete Yorn in style, tempo and tone – his previous, and in my opionion more superior, works do not resemble anything or anyone even remotely popish. Those should you be your point of entry if your just starting to give him a listen. His newer stuff is much more so in the mold of modern day pop/alt country – it bores me to no end. His first 4 albums are crusty old tales of a journeyman and Buckners battle torn, raggedy voice fits that bill much better than Pop. Again, just my opinion.

A reason for Return to Cookie Mountain? – Method … though I won’t hold it against you if you still cannot be convinced … :)

You make it to the Cat Power show last night? ….incredible….I was going to attempt a post when I have a break …

  4. Paul says:

Praveen – Yeah, Sparklehorse album on the 26th :)

Virgil – Thanks man, i’ll definitely have to check those out.

Kt – hahaha i’ve only listened to bits of pieces, never really listened to an entire album. I guess i need to be force fed. I didn’t make it to Cat Power, I really wanted to but I need to save money for next week (Sufjan, MBD / The Submarines, Nouvelle Vague / CSS/Ladytron).

  5. BFP says:

Wow. Magnolia Electric Co has a wonderful sound. I’ll definitely check them out! Thanks!!

I just realized I forgot about Basement Jaxx’s new album, oh well it’s been mentioned in a previous entry if anyone wanted to know.

  7. Anonymous says:

Two things this world needs more of: Richard Buckner and Bettie Serveert.

Go out and buy all of their albums. Soon.

  8. Pablo says:

I totally agree about the Rapture. The occasional great songs are really great, everything else elicits a ‘meh…’
