I forgot to mention The Grates’ first full-length release on The Daily Graboid yesterday. I dunno, I guess it just happened to slip my mind. It happens a lot though when I write up that feature, as i’m always forgetting something. So for that little bit of negligence on my part, here’s a full write-up on The Grates just for you. Before we start, if you dig what you hear from this Aussie trio, there’s a nice little giveaway that Filter is offering on their site. The sweet little package includes a limited edition Pez MP3 Player, along with personalized Grates goodies: a signed CD copy of The Ouch. The Touch. EP, a CD copy of Gravity Won’t Get You High and a Grates t-shirt signed with personalised doodles and drawing by John, Patience and Alana themselves. Sounds pretty good yeah? So head over there and sign up for it why don’t you?!
I actually had listened to Gravity Won’t Get You High months ago, and I was expecting a lot considering the good words I read about it on Skatterbrain, one of my favorite blogs that i completely trust in regards to new music. So when I listened, outside of a few good songs, I just wasn’t having a good vibe about the album as a whole. I dunno, I guess I was expecting too much or either I just wasn’t in the mood for that kind of music at the time. So it kinda got tossed away for a while before I picked it back up a few weeks ago. Listening to it recently though, it sounds a lot better as I my high expectation for it was diminished. I guess that’s how you need to listen to the album as it’s not trying to reinvent the wheel here, it’s just a fun album of catchy pop-rock tunes.
This trio from Brisbane consists of vocalist Patience Hodgson, drummer Alana Skyring and guitarist John Patterson. This album is just chock full of high-powered rock energy, almost like a very light-hearted Yeah Yeah Yeahs kind of sound. Wrapped around all this though is Patience’s vocal delivery that’s just so infectious and leaves you wanting to helplessly sing along with her. Give it a listen though, as it could very well be the soundtrack to your soon to be ending summer.

I agree with your comments on the album. I bought “the ouch. the touch” ep awhile back and had my doubts about the band. luckily I had scored a promo copy of “gravity won’t get you high” at the record store yesterday for $2 and can honestly say that the album is a grower. I too felt the Yeah Yeah Yeahs comparison was spot on, although I can’t say i’m a Yeah Yeah Yeahs fan. maybe The Grates are more infectious than I thought.
