I think i’m on some kind of a roll with all these quirky pop bands. It’s all I want to listen to now, and it will continue until my attention is drawn elsewhere. This album from The Bicycles, The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly has been in rotation at work for weeks now. I’ve been playing the hell out of this album. For good reason too as it’s some of the sweetest bubblegum pop you can get your grubby little hands around. At first glance it would seem staggering to have an album of 17 tracks, but a lot of the songs here barely touch over 1 minute and leave you wanting more. Songs that are so short but super sweet and pack a punch as they’re loaded with crisp guitars, horns and tambourines. The album also features guests contributions that include The Meligrove Band’s Jay Nunes, Hidden Camera’s Mike Olsen, Golden Dog’s Dave Azzolini, Jessica Grassia, Jessie Stein and Gentleman Reg.
This group from Toronto consists of Matt Beckett (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Drew Smith (vocals, guitar, tambourine, yes tambourine!), Randy Lee (bass, vocals), Dana Snell (drums, vocals) and Andrew Scott (trumpet, guitar, keyboard, vocals). Besides the obvious 60’s pop influences in their sound, it wouldn’t be a stretch to compare them to pre-Satanic Panic in the Attic Of Montreal. They’ve also gotten a lot of recognition from a opening slot they did with the UK’s The Boy Least Likely To.
It’s 4:28 a.m, and and while i’m writing in a sleep-deprived mood, i’ve started to come up with some crazy shit. I’m listening to “B-B-Bicycles” and while not paying attention to the actual lyrics, i’m imagining this as a theme song to a tv show of a pair of swinger cops who are part-time surfers. They fight crime, save the day, surf than go about their swinging personas at some night club. Good idea for a show huh? That song makes all that bullshit I just said sound reasonable i swear.
Overall it’s just a fun and happy album and sometimes that’s just the only kind of music you could ever need in the world. You can buy the album here on Fuzzy Logic Recordings or download it digitally here.
