I finally recieved my copy of the Little Miss Sunshine OST a few days ago. I’ve spent most of the weekend listening to it, and of course I love it with the majority of the songs being contributed by the Denver band DeVotchka. There are also tracks featured here from the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Tony Tisdale and Rick James. I’d like to see how those last two artists are used within the context of the film as they are very interesting choices.
This isn’t the first time DeVotchka has been connected to a film as “How It Ends” was played during the end of the trailer for Everything Is Illuminated. I guess you can consider this as close to a proper album release from them, though i’m not devaluing the Curse Your Little Heart EP that was released earlier in the year. That EP is wonderful, though the majority of it being just covers. With this soundtrack you have a few original songs and a few that are performances of the score from film composer Mychael Danna. The rest you can find on their album How It Ends.
I have yet to see the film, even though there are a few free screenings in Atlanta that i’d like to try and make it to later this month. Soundtracks to me are just so wonderful as if a song is chosen correctly for a scene, then it can set that mood perfectly without their even being any kind of a hint as to what’s going on. You hear a song and you just know exactly what is going on. I just absolutely love that. That’s an interesting idea to pick out a bunch of film scenes based on that and compile it here, we’ll see though as it would be very time consuming.
With this soundtrack being released and a few more to look forward to later in the year, (Science of Sleep, Marie Antoinette to name a few) it’s nice to have such refreshing takes from the typical movie soundtrack. I can’t stand when movies are stocked full of whatever is popular in music at that moment, as it can hamper a film. It makes it connected to that period in time, it doesn’t age well. But if you were to truly put some care into what kind of music you want to represent your film then it could create something that is timeless and memorable like Wes Anderson and Cameron Crowe films.
Anywho, if you’re interested in knowing what the film is about then check out the trailer here. The soundtrack is excellent, it even has it’s own myspace page! That’s saying something folks.

‘How It Ends’ is actually their junior effort. ‘Super Melodrama’ was their debut, and ‘Una Volta’ their sophomore release. ‘La Llorona’ is the latter’s closer, and you can find it in its entirety on emusic.
Ah, i had no idea. I just assumed i was correct, thanx for clearing that up though
I think that ‘XXX-Tango’ was their debut – or perhaps it may be termed as an EP and therefore not count? – and it’s a hot little rocker recorded live (at what club? I don’t know…)
I knew the bloggers would get the credits for the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack correct. These blogs are right on the button. The truth eventually prevails.
XXX Tango between Supermelodrama and Una Volta recorded at some small club in Chicago. I think it’s long out of print- but amazing!
i was so excited to hear DeVotchka i nearly jumped out of my seat.
