I think living here in the south my entire life has definitely had it’s influence somewhat musically. It’s sounds have molded my ear towards what I used to think i never truly enjoyed at all. Country and Folk music are something i’m really not a fan of in a general sense, but if it’s used in an unique and interesting way then i’m all for it. Listening to this trio from Austin, Tx – Darling New Neighbors, is a prime example of what I mean by this.

A few days ago, I recieved their new album Every Day Is Saturday Night released on I Eat Records and overall i hear a wide variety of music here. It’s almost like the band decided to throw as many sounds as possible against a wall and see what sticks. They have a very laid back and simply lo-fi appeal to their style of music, but keep it interesting by incorporating all kinds of indie-pop, country, folk, blues and disco sounds.

From their site:
Austin’s own Darling New Neighbors are post-punk connoisseurs of international and pop genres, who in a given set tackle mariachi, accordion disco, and rock with the same aplomb.

In combination, Darling New Neighbors wield a DIY and undaunted approach to tune-crafting that propels them from their base of garage rock and classic pop idioms through a wide-ranging landscape of honkytonk, slow jams, Latin music and hair-metal. A consistent emphasis on melody and lyrics smoothes out the stylistic shifts, creating an unexpected synchrony.

It’s just a whole lot of fun really. I just love the free-wielding approach to their odd style of pop. Listening to Elizabeth Jackson’s old-fashion, twangy vocals to this madness just brings everything together and makes it work.

From what i’ve read though, to truly experience this band is to see their live show. Which i’d love to see, the more i hear about it. You can read an example of that here, along with her take on the group. In less then a week they’ll be hitting a few dates outside of Austin, so definitely check them out and lend them your support.
