Today we turn our attention over the pond to a Welsh band called Camera. This quartet from North Wales were formerly called The Benjamins and changed their name to Camera a few years ago. The band has been together for a number of years, starting all the way back to when they were all in school together. Their debut album, Ashes and Dim Light will be released in the UK on August the 28th on My Kung Fu.
Finding any kind of information on this band has been incredibly difficult. The only articles I could find were on the BBC site. For me, i randomly came across their myspace page a few weeks ago. I listened to the songs, and was pleasantly surprised. Apparently this sound is considered indie, so Welsh indie it is! According to their list of gigs, they opened the Tsunami Relief gig last year and did supporting slots for Bloc Party, Supergrass and The Features.
When I first heard Matthew Nicholls’ voice it almost reminded me of James Walsh of Starsailor except that Nicholls can actually sing and doesn’t sound like a whiny-girly man. That would almost sound like an insult comparing them to Starsailor, as i’m definitely not comparing Camera to them. It’s just what happened to have popped into my head first when i was initially listening. Honestly i wouldn’t know who to compare them to, but they do have that kind of mainstream type of sound that comes out of the UK, which i undoubtedly enjoy. The band has an amazing sound with luscious guitars, wonderful melodies, and great vocals that soar with emotion.
If there is anything right in the world, then a band like this that has an abundance of talent and an excellent sound, should definitely find success everywhere. Give them a listen, very good music.

Camera are an amazing band
I saw Camera at that Tsunami concert – they were amazing! They were the very first band on. They were one of the best of the day. I liked Kelly Jones and Snow Patrol too. But Kelly has sold millions of records. I had never heard of Camera before, but they played like a band like Stereophonics who have done it all before. They were brilliant. I haven’t bought any of their singles because I don’t own a record player, but I cannot wait to buy the album and see them at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium again one day!
