Have you ever heard a song you instantly fell in love with? That’s how I felt about Swedish band Peter Bjorn and John’s newest single Young Folks. I first heard it from GvB’s myspace and have since fell in love with the entire album Writer’s Block. Although it’s a bit forward for me to say this given the fact that there’s another six months left in the year, but Writer’s Block could possibly be the best album of the year. Good songs often include many layers that fit together in simplistic harmony, and it’s the details of each layer that make the songs beautiful. PBJ has successfully accomplished this with every track on the album, combining a myriad of instruments to create a beautifully unique sound. Here’s their description of “Young Folks”:

With the SONG – first single”Young Folks” they have created an indie-anthem for 2006. It starts off with surging, funky drums, addictive maraca shaking, crazy bongos and a pleasantly lo-fi bass-line; all this wrapped up in a whistling melody – the result sounds like a mix of a wild west B-movie and a schoolyard full of fuel-engine kids. The song, that features Peter in a duet with Viktoria Bergsman of The Concretes, deals with that first period in brand new relationship when you are nervous and dazed, when you’ve just met and only want to be with each other whilst at the same time worrying about how much you want to show your true self to the other person so as not to scare them.

The album was released on May 24th in Scandinavia, but you can only purchase it here or from itunes. They even made “Young Folks” into a nifty ringtone, but it’s not available in the U.S. They’re only touring in Europe right now, and there hasn’t been any news of releasing the album or touring in the U.S. Let’s hope!
