The teaser trailer shown at Cannes for Daft Punk’s Electroma has made its way onto YouTube. As I understand it, Electroma finds its roots in some various experimental films from the 70’s and has the two gents from the group(Peter Hurteau billed on IMDB as “Hero #1″ and Michael Reich billed on IMDB as “Robot”) star as robots on a quest to become human (apparently making a Gap ad with Juliette Lewis a while back wasn’t human enough for them). Being that it is a Daft Punk movie, the kicker is that there is not a single Daft Punk song on the soundtrack and in some long moments there is just complete silence. When there is music (which is apparently anytime there is no silence seeing as how there is also no dialogue to be had in the film) it is provided by the likes of Brian Eno, Todd Rundgren, and Curtis Mayfield, among others.
Watching the preview obviously reminds me of their past visualizations, but I do have to say that it kind of creeps me out in the same way that the Qatsi trilogy kind of creeps me out yet keeps me intrigued. I’m guessing that the film may have style going for it over substance, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
