Josh Davis (aka DJ Shadow) is always an interesting subject to discuss. A man who’s brilliance is already marked by what many call a masterpiece, myself included, and as one of the best beat-driven albums of the 90’s. This album as we all know is Entroducing…, an album that defines the genre of instrumental hip-hop and it’s unique usage of samples with ethereal beats and layers that created a perfect atmosphere and mood that was uncommon to come from this kind genre of music. It’s an album that DJ Shadow himself has yet to top, but doesn’t really need to. The man has nothing to prove here as that album has established itself as influencial and broke the boundaries down as to what can be done with a song.
His third, highly anticipated album, The Outsider, will be released on August 21. DJ shadow, who had recently signed with Universal, is quoted as saying this about the new album:
There’s songs on this album that I think blow away almost anything else I’ve ever done. I think song for song it’s the best album I’ve ever made. One thing’s for sure – it’s going to make it very difficult for people to imitate my sound!
I’ve listened to these two tracks, and they are exactly not what i was expecting to hear from him. These two tracks are completely different from each other, with one (“You Made It”) being a complete turnaround from what you’ve come to expect and it makes me wonder what exactly we’re in store for with this album. Stream the two new tracks and listen for yourself.
