I read about The Evening Episode on GvB the other day, and i just had to listen considering who was brought up. With my previous post about Venus Hum explaining my love for the mid 90’s explosion of female electronic-pop, and The Evening Episode comparisons to that genre to the likes of Massive Attack, Portishead, Mazzy Star, etc., you think i can say no to that? Of course not. So I listened, and it’s amazing.

The trio, formed in Sacramento in 2004, have an amazing sound with the bases of this being Teresa Eggers’ drop-dead gorgeous vocal ability. GvB compares her voice to Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, and I definitely agree with that. If i had to compare the sound to anything it reminds me a lot of The Notwist and Lali Puna. It’s electronic music that’s well done with a true sense of beauty and elegance. Something i noticed with a few songs, the ones that top off at over five and six minutes, are that towards the end they begin to venture off into a different direction and become completely new songs. It’s a lovely surprise and something i enjoyed very much.

For the sake of one-line descriptions, The Evening Episode create an ever-evolving collection of both electronic and organic sounds that bloom into dark and melodic indie pop songs. Taking a cue from bands such as The Notwist and Portishead, The Evening Episode merge live instrumentation with a creative electronic backdrop, which adds an element of unique individuality and warmth to their sound. While Eggers’ breathy vocals maintain a personal nature and nervous sexuality to them, they also have a vast range and portray a level of confidence as a singer, and as a song-writer, that stretch far beyond her 20 years.

The new album The Physicist Has Known Sin will be released on July 11 on Slowdance records. Definitely check it out.
