For all you Of Montreal fans out there, i’ve got a nice little surprise for you. Kevin Barnes is probably one of my favorite musical artists at the moment. Everytime you listen to an Of Montreal song you’re guaranteed to find something new, whether it’s the quirky lyrics that are the product of Barnes’ little idiosyncrasies or the multitude of unique and layered sounds that give the group a very distinct sound that’s all their own.

Kevin Barnes is prolific, there’s no question about that. Always working on new material or constantly touring, i don’t know how the man has time for anything. With that being said, there’s been a ton of new material that was released this year and i’ve got most of that for you here. Most of these were off limited edition 7″ that were released and were ultrarare and you probably wouldn’t be able to find them now anywhere besides mp3 format. As usual these are all ace pop songs.

Microuniversity – 7″ that was limited to 300 copies with an interesting story to it:

This was one of the few things that survived the devastation of Hurricane Katrina (yeah I know, way to drag it out, but it really sucked and this is a true story). Right before we evacuated from New Orleans we shoved some boxes into the top of our closet, just thinking maybe if for some reason the windows blew out and rain entered our second story apartment that these items might be saved. Well, different situation. The levee which was 2 blocks from our place busted and 14 feet of water flooded up the stairs and left us covered in mold. Keeping things in a nice dark closet was a bad idea after all, and most of the Park the Van product in the closet was destroyed by mold. However, these Of Montreal records weren’t. They were pristine.

I’ve also got another new song that was released this past spring called “A Cloud Crashes” which was featured on the band’s Myspace. It’s said to be a cover of a Japanese song, but i have no clue. The last song i’ve got for you all is an older demo that never made it onto the 1997 release Cherry Peel, everyone should listen to it just because of the song title “Big Tittied Sluts”. I’ve actually got the entire demo of unreleased tracks for that album and also for 2001’s Coquelicot Asleep In The Poppies, so if anyone would like to hear those i can post them sometime.

They’ve also got a huge summer/fall tour coming up so definitely check them out if they’re in your area.
